[Aphid transmission, distribution and serotyping of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) in Syria]

Rhopalosiphum padi L. was the most efficient vector of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) in Syria followed by Sitobion (Macrosiphum) avenae Fabricius and Schizaphis graminum Rondani. Rhopalosiphum maidis Fitch was the least efficient vector. Monitoring relative BYDN-content by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in inoculated oats versus time revealed the importance of frequent testing and the use of broad spectrum antisera in order to increase chances of virus detection. The serological testing of 11925 cereal leaves collected randomly from 31 locations in Al-Jazireh and Al-Ghab areas indicated that BYDV incidence in April 1987 was higher in barley (16.3%) than in wheat (3.9%) fields. In addition, serological testing of a total of 84 barley, oats, and wheat plants with symptoms suggestive of BYDV infection indicated that the PAV type of BYDV was the most prevalent. The MAV and PRV types were also detected. Serological variability within each BYDV-type was also observed
