Experimental trials were conducted on seventeen tomato and nine cucumber cultivars (cvs.) in different localities under greenhouse conditions along the coastal area: Sin-El-Fil, Bwar, and Beirut. The trials covered a two-year period (1984-86), and were made to select the best cvs. based on horticultural characteristics: yield, fruit shape, size and color, fruit quality, earliness, and reaction to diseases. The tomato cvs. that were tested are: F1 Special, Carla (Carmello), Cantatos, Angela Gigante, Vendor, Restino, Atlantic City, Marmand, Ontario, Fantastic, 7718 VF, Delmar, Conquest, Carmelita, Concreto, and Castlemart II. The first four cvs. were selected and recommended on the base of verall performance. The cucumber cvs. were tested: Blue Bird, XpH 1413, 83.136, Perfecto, Medina II, Fidelio, Damscus, and Khalifa. The first four cvs. performed significantly better than the rest. Fruit quality tests, pH, total soluble solids %, titrable acidity %, that were conducted on the best four yielding tomato cvs. showed high statistical significant difference among cvs. at the four ripening stages: green, turning, pink and red. The best four tomato cvs. were susceptible to tomato yellow leaf curl virus. Cantatos and Carla were susceptible to grey mold disease. Blue Bird, XpH 1413, Rock F1 were susceptible to mildews. Line 83.136, however, was resistant to powdery mildew and highly tolerant to downy mildew. The above mentioned cvs. of tomato and cucumber are recommended for growing commercially under greenhouse environments along the coastal area in Lebanon
