Skeletal development in the foal is not essentially different from that in other mammals but misconceptions are not uncommon, often because of confused nomenclature. Appreciation of the skeletal development of foals is important in the understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms involved in diseases of the young foal. This paper describes skeletal development in the foal, and discusses implications of some aspects of bone development in chondro-osseous disease
