Silt control, green engineering, and stormwater quality measurement in the urban environment

This paper discusses a short study tour of three eastern Australian cities; Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne and their environs to observe techniques and procedures to control silt runoff from urban earthwork sites. Of particular interest was the use of green engineering techniques in both silt control and urban stormwater quality management. Recent pressures on the extractive and recreational water resource in the Auckland region, New Zealand have given these concepts a high profile. This paper describes those measures observed on the Australian tour, and how they are being applied to a New Zealand situation
