Using cryoscanning electron microscopy, variations in micromorphological leaf surface characters were examined in 14 rice varieties. The results showed a large number of leaf surface characteristics even within a single variety, but there were few obvious correlations between the presence or absence of any individual character and varietal type. The presence of a high density of long hairs over the upper leaf surface was virtually confined to lowland types; and certain characters such as hair type and density appeared to be heritable. In view of the complexity of varietal relationships and the range of character variation involved, techniques of computer-aided numerical taxonomy must be applied to determine genetic relationships among varieties.
