Reproductive performance of tilapia (Tilapia nilotica) strains under indoor and outdoor conditions

Samson, N.P.
The reproductive performance of crosses of Tilapia nilotica strains stocked under indoor and outdoor conditions were evaluated. Nine concrete tanks measuring 1 m x 1 m x 1.4 m each were used for indoor condition. On the other hand, nine hapas having the same dimensions as the concrete tank were installed in a 500-sq m pond. No data were gathered under indoor condition because the breeder stocked therein failed to breed. However, data obtained under outdoor condition did not show significant differences (P0.05) among all crosses of Tilapia nilotica strains in terms of spawning frequency and number of days from stocking to first spawning. Significant differences (P0.05) were observed between spawning intervals and number of fry produced per spawning in all crosses of the tilapia breeders. Water parameters like temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, water depth and secchi disk visibility were found to be within tolerable limits.
