Variation in Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn causing sheath blight in sorghum [Philippines]

Six isolates of Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn from sorghum, corn and mungbean that infect sorghum plants differed in mycelial growth rate, onset of sclerotial primordia formation, size and number of mature sclerotia and sites of sclerotial production. They also exhibited characteristic variation when grown on two culture media. Correlation of some of their cultural and morphological characters to degree of pathogenicity was determined. A susceptible disease reaction was shown by sorghum variety, UPL Sg-5, when inoculated with R. solani isolates from sorghum and corn but exhibited a resistant disease reaction when inoculated with the mungbean isolate. Root length inhibition bioassay was used to evaluate the toxic metabolite of two sorghum isolates and one corn isolate of R. solani. Among the three isolates tested, one sorghum isolate (S2) collected from Central Mindanao University, Musuan, Bukidnon [Philippines] showed highest toxicity index and consistently gave the highest percent infection on UPL Sg-5
