A prototype of an expert system, DISMAN was developed for two major rice diseases, tungro and blast. DISMAN is aimed at providing the intended end-user a computer-based decision-aid and a learning experience in disease management. The intended end-users are the researchers, trainees, extension workers and students. The structure of DISMAN includes a database, knowledge base (Rules) and line reasoning while the inferencing program is built into the Expert shell called PC Easy TM. There are three databases: 1.) recommended varieties for both irrigated and rainfed lowland which include the following: maturity, reaction to major insect pests and diseases; 2.) recommended insecticides for rice which include information on common name, brand name and its recommended rates of application; and 3.) recommended fungicides for rice. The important driving parameters for the tungro module include the culture types (lowland irrigated/rainfed and upland), crop stage, variety, planting method, the number of times the particular variety was planted, vector population and history of tungro epidemics. The blast module includes the following parameters; culture type, variety, rate of nitrogen application, crop stage, season, rainfall pattern/frequency, and amount of disease at particular stage. Further versions are envisioned to include yield loss predictions
