Field evaluation of insect growth regulators (CGA 72662) and two azamethiphos formulations for the control of the housefly, Musca domestica Linn., in poultry farms

Adult houseflies were monitored using Scudder grill and spot cards while maggots, mites and other arthropods were sampled from one liter of poultry manure. Azamethiphos (Alfacron R) used as paint-on at 0.125 gm and 0.1875 gm ai/ square meter significantly reduced fly populations by 80.6% and 86.3%, respectively a week following the second treatment. There was also corresponding reduction in adult fly activities as measured by low counts in fecal droplets. A granular bait (SNIP R) containing 1% azamethiphos and a sex attractant applied at 2.0 gm/square meter gave 95.2% and 96.3% mortality in adult flies in separate poultry broiler farms. Female flies were less attracted to the bait as shown by a male-female sex ratio of 2.2:1. Maggot populations in one farm dropped by 100%. A synthetic insect growth regulator (CGA 72662, Neporex R), applied at 0.50 gm ai on manure gave 100% mortality of maggots a week after the second application. At 0.75 gm ai, it was harmless to mites and beetles predaceous on housefly eggs and maggots.
