Fungal treatment and feeding value of rice straw, dried banana leaves, cogon hay and corn stalk evaluated in vitro

Results indicated that among the four substrate materials used, cogon hay had the highest crude protein [CP] and dry matter, rice straw had the highest crude fiber and ash, corn stalks contained the highest amount of phosphorus, and dried banana leaves had the highest calcium content. In terms of chemical composition of the mushroom bed materials (waste), cogon hay contained the highest CP and NFE [nitrogen free extract] while urea-ensiled rice straw had the highest crude fiber and ash. Urea-ensiled rice straw had the highest organic matter digestibility. The in-vitro analysis revealed that corn stalks could supply the highest crude protein and fiber. Rice straw and banana leaves provided remarkably higher palatability as the urea-ensiled rice straw. Cogon hay was not as acceptable as rice straw and banana leaves. Corn stalks were rejected though it can provide nutritious diet for the animals.
