To determine the causes for low survival and reproduction of rice leaffolder, Marasmia patnalis on resistant rice varieties, total protein variability between 3rd instar larvae of M. patnalis reared on resistant TKM6 plants, and on susceptible IR22 plants was analyzed using disc gel electrophoresis. Out of 34 protein bands detected, only 24 were present among larvae feeding on TKM6 plants while 28 were present among larvae feeding on IR22 plants. Six protein bands mostly anodal were distinct only among those feeding on resistant variety while 10 protein bands mostly cathodal were distinct among those feeding on susceptible variety. Protein band numbers 32 and 33 were present only among larvae reared on susceptible variety at a high frequency and were totally absent among those reared on resistant variety.
