Enhancement of seedling growth with extracts from coconut water

Plant growth hormones were extracted from coconut water (CW) by direct extraction with methylene chloride at pH 5-6, 2 and 11. A total yield of 22, 349 mg. of extracts were obtained from 50L of CW. Fractionation of the CW dialyzate was also done on an activated charcoal column by stepwise elution with ethanol, acetic acid, 25% acetonitrite and basic alcohol. Comparison of the UV [ultra violet] spectral curves of the CW extracts with that of standard growth hormones indicated the presence of substances resembling indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellic acid (GA), abscissic acid and cytokinins, zeatin and kinetin. Bioassays of treated centrosema, rice, corn and several legumes showed increases in root and stem elongation and root branching over control. Earlier nodulation was observed for centrosema treated plants. Scanning electron micrographs of roots of rice treated with pH2 extract showed greater number of rootlets and branches over control.
