During the wet season, detasseling + carbofuran, detasseling + diazinon - carbaryl and deltamethrin exhibited good control of the cornborer as shown by low damage rating, number of tunnels, larval count per plant. Detasseling alone significantly reduced the tunnels and larvae as effectively as treated plots with detasseling + follow-up spray of intact tassels. Diazinon-carbaryl with intact tassels was least effective. The highest benefit/cost ratio of 11.3 and 72 were obtained from detasseling alone. Cyhalothrin and detasseled cypermethrin obtained a benefit cost ratio of 8:0 and 6.3, respectively. The highest net gain in these treatments were due to low labor and insecticide inputs and high field price of corn.
