Thiazolidine compounds as a new group of crop safeners against herbicide damage

A rational approach was used to find herbicide safeners among compounds that might be capable of increasing glutathione for detoxication of herbicides in plants. Two thiazolidine compounds potentially capable of being mobilized to yield cysteine showed activity as safeners. Inhibitions causing up to 50 percent reduction in growth resulting from treatment with herbicides such as alachlor or tridiphane oxirane were totally prevented by OTC (L-2 oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid) or thioproline. These two safeners were as effective as herbicide antidotes as was flurazole and were less phytotoxic than flurazole. Evaluations have not been conducted to determine if the antagonisms can be demonstrated under field conditions. Alterations in plant thiol content by safeners and herbicides require modification of the discovery hypothesis relative to mode of action of the safeners. Present data is not sufficient to distinguish whether protective action is related to a) conversion of safeners to thiol groups, b) conversion to cysteine, or c) increases in glutathione content of plants.
