Nutrient uptake and response of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) to different levels of N-K combinations

A study to determine nutrient uptake and response of sweet potato, VSP-4, to various levels of N-K combinations was conducted on an Umingan sandy loam at the Experimental Station of the Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center, ViSCA [Visayas State College of Agriculture, Baybay, Leyte, Philippines]. As early as 20 DAP [days after planting], significant differences in LAI [leaf area index] were observed among fertilizer treatments. Plants which received 90-90 kg N-K/ha had the highest LAI (1.29) at 65 DAP but declined at 80 DAP. Plants fertilized with high rates of N-K combinations (90-90, 90-120 and 120-120 kg N-K/ha) produced longer vines and high herbage yield. Heavy application of nitrogen and potassium (90-120 kg N-K/ha) depressed tuber formation and stimulated vine growth. Higher tuber yields were obtained in treatments 30-60 and 30-120 kg N-K/ha (18.77 and 20.28 t/ha respectively). Based on the results of the study, the 30-60 kg N-K/ha treatment is recommended as the optimum N-K level for tuber production in sweet potato.
