Ecological and economic factors in herding practices of the Mongols
1988
Szynkiewicz, S.
The paper deals with some essential conditions influencing the herding economy of the Mongol nomads in the 20th century. Dependence on ecology in three main geographical zones (Khangai, steppe and Gobi) is described. Then a new idea of three meridional socio-economic regions is developed suggesting a division into eastern, central and western regions. Evidence is brought to substantiate their existence in the past and present. They manifest themselves in a sequence of diverse levels of increasing advancement bearing on their adaptability to change and modernization
