Use of Vertisols for rainfed sorghum in the central clay plain in Sudan
1989
Babiker, I.A.
About 33 per cent of the cultivated land in the Sudan is planted with sorghum by mechanized farming. The principal sorghum-growing area is the low-rainfall savanna of the Central Clay Plain. Yield reduction and soil degradation are attributed to difficulties in land preparation and timely sowing, lack of fertilizer inputs, crop rotation, improved crop varieties and inadequate control measures for pests and diseases. Integrated research and development programs should consider the interactions between the various yield-reducing factors and the socioeconomic environment
