Barley yellow dwarf infectivity of Rhopalosiphum padi in maize as an estimate of primary inoculum pressure in irrigated winter wheat

Barley yellow dwarf (BYD) has become an increasingly important limiting factor in irrigated small grain production in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Capability to predict BYD outbreaks depends upon measuring vector flight intensity and primary inoculum pressure. Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) collected from maize (Zea mays L.), from newly emerged small grains and from a suction trap modified for live collection were assayed for BYDV transmission. Percent transmission by R. padi collected on small grains was the same or slightly higher than by R. padi collected in maize. Percent transmission by R. padi in the suction trap was considerably higher than by R. padi collected on plants. It appears from our data that a measure of the inoculum reservoir in maize could be a good predictor of primary inoculum in cereals in irrigated areas in the Pacific Northwest.
