In addition to segregating populations, 132 nurseries that consisted of more than 21,000 durum wheat lines have been introduced and tested in Ethiopia. Only 6.6 of the entries were retained after the first screening. The majority were found to be very susceptible to stem rust. Two varieties, one each from segregating populations and stable lines, were released. However, in terms of genotypes included in the National Durum Wheat Yield Trial the proportion coming from selections from segregating populations has been higher than that of stable lines, although it decreased after the development of lines from the crosses of the national program. The growing of segregating populations and selecting lines from the subsequent generations have been found to be more productive than testing stable lines. The role of introductions in the national crossing program is also emphasized
