Occurrence of barley yellow dwarf virus in three major cereal-growing regions of Spain

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)-based surveys during the three years 1985-1987, in three major cereal-growing areas of Spain, confirmed the presence of barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). Samples of small grain cereals and grasses with and without barley yellow dwarf-like symptoms were sent to Purdue University where they were screened by ELISA. The results indicated the presence of PAV-, MAV-, and RPV-like isolates of BYDV. PAV-like isolates were the most common type, and were present in all the sampled areas. Isolates like RPV were detected only in samples from the central region at El Encin, Madrid. Only one single sample, collected from El Encin in 1987, was unequivocally diagnosed as containing an MAV-like isolate. The possible impact of BYDV in these major cereal-growing regions is discussed with special reference to its epidemiology.
