Observation of three sugarcane varieties inoculated with sugarcane smut

In a greenhouse trail the three most important varieties for the Marienburg Sugar Estate, Suriname, were observed for their external symptoms of smut disease after inoculation with a spore suspension of sugarcane smut. Within six weeks after inoculation, variety HJ5741 reacted with the formation of whips. Variety O141.46 produced its first whip after 20 weeks, whereas variety B41.227 did not show any symptoms typical of smut disease. These three varieties were also observed in the field with symptoms compared to those observed under greenhouse conditions.
