Inheritance of pod borer resistance in soybean (Glycine max (L.) merr.)

Seven ones of 11 crosses of soybean were tested against released Heliothis armigera larvae under natural condition. Four crosses were tested in a 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.5 meter nylon net supplied with mass reared larvae. Each cross comprised 6 generations of female parent (P1), male parent (P2), F1, F2 and backcross progenies to both parents (B1 and B2). Generation differences were detected by pod damage percentage in 3 crosses under natural condition and 2 crosses under nylon net condition. No heterobeltiosis was significant in percent pod damage of any cross whereas SJ 4 x G 2105 was the only cross displayed heterobeltiosis in yield per plant. Generation mean analysis indicated that pod borer resistance was heritable under field condition by additive gene effect in SJ 5 x G 2102, SJ 5 x G 2105 and SJ 5 x 8506. The same type of gene effect was detected in G 3473 x SJ 5 and G 3473 x G 2102 under nylong net condition. Additive gene effect was significant in yield per plant of SJ 4 x G 8506 and G 3818 x G 2102 under field condition. The significance was also found in cross G 3818 x SJ 5 under nylon net condition. Since crosses having significant additive gene effect in pod borer resistance were not the same crosses as in yield per plant, selection for a line having both resistance and high yield would be difficult.
