Study of Sarcocystis in the esophageal muscles of cattle and buffaloes was conducted on 328 cattle and 211 buffaloes slaughtered in two abattoirs one run by the Preserved Food Organization, Ban Pong District, Ratchaburi Province and the other by a private company in the Bangkok municipality. Sarcocystis was found in 2(0.61 %) cattle and 81 (38.39 %) buffaloes when a macroscopic examination was used, in 57 (17.38 % cattle and 77 (36.49 %) buffaloes when a stereoscopic examination was used, and in 326 (99.39 %) cattle and 211 (100 %) buffaloes when the digestion technique was used. A histological study revealed that S. crusi was present in higher numbers than S. hirsuta of S. hominis in cattle. The results indicate a tremendously high rate of Sarcocystis infection in cattle and buffaloes in Thailand.
