Heavy metal content in Thai food

Between 1983 and 1987, five hundred and sixty-three samples of 5 kinds of food items were analysed for the content of 9 heavy metals using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, Flameless Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. The data obtained will be used in drafting standard of heavy metal in food and filling the circular letter of Codex Alimentarius Commission. The content of more than 0.02 mg/kg of mercury was found in 20 samples of food analysed (not included seafood) (3.6 %, more than 1.00 mg/kg of lead in 97 samples (17.2 % and more than 20.00 mg/kg of copper in 5 samples (0.9 %. It was found that the contamination of lead and cadmium in Thai food was higher than in Finland food. It was also found from this study that the dietary intake of toxic metals (mercury, lead, arsenic, and cadmium) was lower than in USA (FDA).
