Preliminary study on producing of fly larva meal from pig faeces as protein source in animal diets

A preliminary study on fly larva meal grown on pig faeces (liveweight of pigs about 18-20 kgs). The fresh faeces had moisture content about 76.9% and crude protein about 21.03% of dry matter. The faeces were put in 30 inches diameter trays, the thickness of faeces was about 2-3 inches and left in the pig sty for flies to sow their eggs. After 4 days, fly larvae were collected and separated from the faeces by application of heat and sunlight. They were cooked, dried and ground in a hammer mill. The study showed that 10 kgs. of fresh faeces could produce 1.89 kgs. of fly larvae or 0.47 kgs. of dry larvae, in percentage was 18.9 kgs. and 4.7 respectively. Based on dry matter, the production of fly larva meal was 20.09%. The fly larva meal had moisture contents 8.53% crude protein 45.13%, fat 15.53%, fiber 5.9%, ash 16.9%, calcium 2.95%, phosphorus 2.31% and high level of essential amino acid. The average cost of fly larva meal was 2.86 baht/kg. The producing of fly meal did not have any affect for the number of flies in farm.
