[Itchy snails]
1989
Phanom Sotsuk
The itchy snails of two genera, Lymnaea and Indoplanorbis, found in Thailand are L. (Radix) auricularia rubiginosa, L. (R.) a. swinhoei, L. (R.) viridis, L. (R.) luteola and I. exustus. The characters of each race are already explained in details. These races serve as intermediate hosts to the avian and mammalian species of blood flukes, belonging to the family Schistosomatidae, that cause a severe dermatitis or 'swimmer's itch'. The dermatitis is produced by the incomplete penetration into human skin by the cercariae of those blood flukes. Several methods of prevention and control are also mentioned to.
