This study provides a description of the origin of cultivated sunflower, distribution and economic importance of sunflower, taxonomy and main characteristics of the species from the Helianthus genus. Special emphasis in the publication is given to the designing of hybrid models for specific agroecological conditions and breeding of the most important properties: components of seed and oil yield, plant height, size and form of the head, harvest index, oil quality, protein content and protein quality, resistance to diseases and pests, resistance to drought.
