A greenhouse experiment was carried out with young maize plants which were grown on samples of a calcareous chernozem soil for a period of 28 days. Soil samples were taken from a long-term field experiment of Maize Research Institute Zemun Polje (Yugoslavia). The content of various-forms of inorganic and organic phosphorus was determined in all soil samples. Uptake of phosphorus by maize plants was compared with the content of each individual form of this nutrient element in the soil. Significant correlation was found between phosphorus uptake and the following fractions of phosphorus: aluminium phosphates, iron phosphates, water soluble and weakly bound phosphates as well as labile fraction of organic phosphorus.
