By stratifying areas into homogeneous stands, the efficiency of forest inventory is increased. Through stratification carried out with the help of a chart of aerially mapped stands, we have improved the evaluation of the general growing stock in the forest of Hrasticje (Slovenia, Yugoslavia). At the same time we have also increased the concreteness of collected data. A comparison between stratified and non--stratified sampling in the mentioned forest shows, that when stratification is not taken into consideration, we need 50% more sample plots in order to achieve the same accuracy when evaluating growing stock. An aerial stand map is an excellent instrument when stratifying forest areas.
