Nitrogenase activity is an indicator of efficacy of nitrogen fixing bacteria. In this paper, the nitrogenase activity was determined for forty nine strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum, isolated on the chernozem soil. The bacteria wer grown in liquid YM medium. The sterilized pea seed was inoculated with 1 ml 109 cells of each strain. Plants were grown in the glasshouse in the sterile sand cultures with addition of the nutritive solution without nitrogen. At the stage of flowering, the nitrogenase activity was determined in pea nodules by the colourimetric method of Z h o u et al.(1982). The nitrogenase activity ranged from 20,11 to 272,75 nmol C2H4 per plant. With twenty one strain, the nitrogenase activity was over 45 nmol C2H4 per plant/h.
