Relations between the dose of primary infection and maturation of Ascaris suum in piglets

In order to determine the relation between the dose of infective eggs for the primary infection of pigs and the maintenance and maturation of Ascaris suum, three experiments were performed in 264 pigs. In the case of infection with 2,000 infective eggs of A. suum of pigs of different age before consuming colostrum, at the age of 48 hours and 5, 10 and 15 days, the prepatent period of ascarids is shorter in pigs from non-immune mothers. In the case of infection of pigs of different age (before consuming colostrum, at the age of 48 hours and 5, 10 and 15 days) with different doses of infective eggs of A. suum (100, 500, 1.000 and 2.000) the prepatent period is longer as the dose of infection increases, and it also becomes longer (up to a limit) with the age of pigs at the moment of infection. In the case of infection of pigs of different age (before consuming colostrum, at the age of 48 hours and 10, 22 and 45 days) with a different number of infective eggs of A. suum (50, 100, 500, 1.000 and 5.000), as the dose decreases, the higher is the percentage of the maintenance of ascarids; at the same dosage, if the treated pigs are older, the percentage of the maintenance of ascarids is higher. This leads to the conclusion that also in the primary infection of pigs the maintenance and maturation of A. suum is basically regulated by the immune status.
