Variation patterns of six morphometric characters were examined in a laboratory population of the bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus, and a considerable level of variation was found. Regression estimates of heritability indicated low to moderate level of heritable variation for the analysed characters. We also attempted to detect the individual characters most strongly associated with fitness (measured through fecundity differences among females). Selection gradient analyses did not provide evidence that variation in female reproductive success was associated with variation in morphology.
