Growth patterns of different tissues of turkey toms

The development of breast and thigh muscles, bones and skin of three strains of turkey toms used for fattening, at the age of 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 weeks, has been studied. In all three of the strains it was established that bones mature earlier than the muscles, while intensive development of the skin continues. The breast muscles of the heavyweight strains (hybrid 3000 and Nikolas) developed faster than the cleaned carcass weight and the thigh muscles. At a younger age of the middleweight strain (strain 2000), the thigh muscles developed faster than the breast muscles. This was the case until the end of the 22nd week, when the breast muscle mass surpassed the thigh muscle mass with its intensity and reached the speed of development of the heavyweight strains. The breast bones, as well as the breast skin develop quicker than the thigh bones and skin in all three of the strains. the skin of the heavyweight strains has a greater stimulus for development than the skin of the middleweight strains.
