Some morphological features of the dorsal nasal passage and their functional importance

By studing the pig nasal cavity as a whole and by analysing a series of its transversal sections, the changes in the configuration of nasal passages were monitored. It was observed that the changes were conditioned by the development and shape of facial bones, nasal partition, nasal conchae and the so-called "swell bodies". These elements affect the formation of nasal cavity as a whole and particularly that of nasal passages, which is of vital importance for respiratory and olfactory function. It can be assumed that the more elongated and curbed a snout is, the better the olfactory function is. This is more prominent in wild pigs than in domestic ones that have a relatively short and straight nasal cavity.
