After one year of poplar and willow wood storage, colonization of microorganisms occurred. They can be classifield into three basic groups: bacteria, fungi which cause wood colouring and fungi which cause wood rot. During storage of cellulosic willow and poplar wood, the relative cellulose wood content increased due to a more significant decomposition of other wood components. The pentosan content decreased during the entire observation period along with a significantly greater decrease in unbarked wood. After four months of wood storage, the lignin content underwent a relative increase, while after a year it decreased by an average of 7.8% and 13.3%. The obtained results exclude the need for chemical protection of cellulosic poplar and willow wood.
