Some aspects of the river Danube selfpurification in the Iron Gate I reservoir [Yugoslavia]

Physical, biochemical and biological processes in the Iron Gate I reservoir (the river Danube, Yugoslavia) were investigated. Processed of organic matter degradation and reaeration under critical conditions of autumn, low water level, were studied. It was found that under those conditions, selfpurification processes are very intensive. Biodegradation of organic carbon and nitrogen components is very effective. The diversity and population density of plankton changes in relation to changes in organic matter along the reservoir, but pollution indicator species distribution was not in accordance with oxygen deficit. Very intensive sedimentation processes causes accumulation of sediments with high organics, nutrients and heavy metal content. These sediments cause dissolved oxygen deficit and degradation of water quality in Iron Gate I reservoir. There are lots of indications of a disturbed ecosystem at present, as well as in the future.
