Effects of Ustilago maydis chlamydospore on performance and blood count in fattening pigs

Effects of the chlamydospore Ustilago maydis added to complete feed (CF) fattening mixture were examined in female pigs 25-60 kg body weight . Twenty pigs in fattening were divided into two groups, 10 animals each . Pigs were put to fattening with the CF without (Group K) or with the addition of 1% Ustilago maydis chlamydospore (Group 0). Performance, blood count and general health status were monitored. In relation to Group K experimental Group 0 had by 9.06% less average body and daily gain (29.1 kg : 32.0 kg : 32.0 kg; 0.582 kg : 0.640 kg) and by 6.98% less food consumption (1.60 kg : 1.72 kg), but 2.31% better conversion (2.749 kg : 2.687 kg). Differences between average body and daily weight gain of the two groups was not statistically significant. Erytrocyte and leukocyte count and Hb concetration in the blood were determined on the 12th and 40th day as of the beginning of the experiment and were within the physiological limits. Again, there was no statistical significance between the two groups. Erythrocyte count in group 0 on day 12 and 40 was less than in Group K (6.46 and 6.63 x 10 12/l and 6.67 and 7.93 x 10 12/l). The concentrations of haemoglobin were 134 and 161 g/l or 183 and 204 g/l, respectively. Leukocyte count on days 12 and 40 was higher in Group 0 (10.90 and 8.20 x 10 9/l) than in Group K (8.90 and 6.30 x 10 9/l). The addition of chlamydospores to CF mixture did not affect the health of swine.
