Physiological variations of the form and structure of some bone elements in the horse: Roentgenological investigations

Fibulae of 400 horses, divided into 4 age groups (1-5, 6-10, 11-15 and 16-20 years of age), were studied with the help of roentgenological tests. The discontinuities of fibulae in the region of the proximal epiphysial groove or diaphysis represent a normal phenomenon which does not have an effect on the limb function. Fibulae ossification was extended to the 15th year. By the 5th year, 37% of the fibulae had fused, 24% from the 6th to the 10th year and 6% from the 11th to the 15th year. Retarded development of the epiphysial groove, the degeneration and necrosis of cartilaginous tissue and the presence of collagenous fibers and solid connective tissue have been discovered. The withers had also been studied in 500 healthy horses of both sexes, between the ages of 3 months and 20 years, and it had been established that a standard roentgenological picture, in the classical sense, does not exist. There is also a description of the spinous process and the variability of this part of the bone tissue.
