Several Yugoslav spring varieties of barley have been tested in production conditions of a mountainous region of Romania (Yugoslavia). Average yields were 3.56 t/ha of grains. The 1000 grain weight of the tested varieties ranges from 36 to 47 g. The share of first class grains in 10 of the varieties, satisfied the malting industry requirements, while for all varieties these values range from 83.57% to 92.09%. The content of total proteins was 14.3-16.2%. To match the yield with the protein content, adequate fertilization is needed.
