The level of natural and fallout radionuclides in honey

The content of natural (40K) and some fallout radionuclides (131J, 134Cs, 137Cs, 103Ru and 106Ru) in different types of honey before and after the nuclear accident in Chernobyl (USSR) in 1986, were examined. The radionuclide activities were determined on a Ge(Li) detector by standard gamma spectorometry. The honey from oilseed rupe, black locust and mixed flowers was sampled on different localities in SR Srbia (Yugoslavia) in tree different periods. The content of potassium in all of the investigated samples of honey ranged from 0.40-0.91 gK/kg of honey, that is from 12.5-29.0 Bq/kg of potassium-40. Before the accident, the only fission product to be measured in honey was 123Cs with activities from 1.0-2.5 Bq/kg. After the accident there were other fission products found in honey. Their contents depended on the type of honey, the locality and the time of sampling and were also related to the differences in half-lives between the radionuclides. Generally, the contents of the fission products in honey were increased ten or more times immediately after the nuclear accident in 1986, compared to the contents of natural potassium-40.
