On the basis of several-year investigations in stationary experiments and their results it can be concluded that the existing sowing structure should be changed in areas of northern Banat and Backa and eastern Banat (Yugoslavia). Maize can be successfully cultivated in a monoculture with small variations of ecologic factors and on the fertile soil. In semi-arid climate, the basic tillage is very significant for preserving the winter moisture reserves. Between the content of N-min in the soil and the yield there is a high correlation of the square regression type (y=a+bx+cx ) and the correlation coefficient is very high (r=0.98). The yield is, by its optimum density, also under the strong influence of before-vegetational precipitations (x1), precipitations during vegetation (x3) and real evapotranspiration (x2), the equation of the multiple regression is y = -53,396 + 0.041 + 0.249x2 + 0.070x3. Depending on precipitations in winter, the optimum density should be reduced by 10-15%. Maize ploughing/ha can save 58.8 l of fuel.
