Growth response of ensheathed cyanobacteria to industrial effluents

The molasses distillery at Aska and fertilizer factory at Talcher, both located in the Orissa state, India, discharges large quantities of untreated liquid wastes containing objectionable amount of various inorganic salts and organic wastes to the surrounding area including rice fields. Only few ensheathed cyanobacterial species occurred in the waste water receiving areas. Gloeothece sp. (PCC 6909) and Calothrix parietina (UU Ca 1) which possess thick sheath around the cells/trichome, tolerated higher concentrations of the distillery and fertilizer factory waste waters than the thin- sheathed Westiellopsis sp. (UU We 5) and sheathless Anacystis nidulans (CCAP 1805/1) in laboratory culture. The extracellular sheath isolated from Gloeothece PCC 6909 showed that it was composed of predominantly carbohydrate and protein. Quantitative differences in carbohydrate and protein content of the sheath was observed between the organism grown with or without 10% (v/v) of the neutralized effluent of the distillery and fertilizer factory.
