Matching technology generation with farmers' need in a flood affected area: III. mitigating livestock feed crisis with the use of dried maize stover

An on-farm experiment on voluntary intake of dried maize stover by bullock was conducted in a flood affected area of multilocation trial site, Keshabpur, Jassore during March-May, 1988. The dried stover (3 kg/bullock) was chopped and soaked overnight and mixed with either mustard oilcake, paddy straw, pulses hay or common salt alone (0.25, 0.75, 0.75 and 0.05 kg/bullock, respectively) or in combinations viz. Paddy straw + common salt (at the same rates). Each feed combination and sole maize stover were fed to five bullocks for five days after the adjustment period of five days. The voluntary intake of stover per bullock was found highest (2.40 kg) when it was mixed with paddy straw + mustard oilcake. The same was statistically identical to the intake quantities when mixed with pulses hay + mustard oilcake (2.30 kg), only mustard oilcake (2.24 kg), paddy straw + common salt (2.20 kg) and pulses hay + common salt (2.13 kg). The lowest intake (0.75 kg) was observed with the sole maize stover. Similar trend in ingestions. Mustard oilcake containing higher ether extract was found to be the best ingredient to increase intake of maize stover. Farmers did not require any cash for maize stover, pulses hay and mustard oilcake since they had those items as by products of their crops at that particular time. Use of dried maize stover thus can mitigate the fodder needs after such a natural crisis without involving any cash.
