Nine varieties and one hybrid line of indica rice were studied to determine their callus induction ability and plant regeneration potential using grain and root as explants in MS medium, The results showed variation depending on genotypes. In grain culture the callus induction frequency ranged from 24.0 to 93.3% and in root culture the same ranged from 56.0 to 92.0% mm whereas in the root derived calli the diameter was only 2 to 3 mm. Grain derived calli regenerated 6.2 to 18.6% plants from seven varieties but calli from roots regenerated 5.0 to 22.4% plants from three varieties only.
