A trial began on October 20, 1980, to determine banana response to potassium, magnesium, and liming in the acid and low fertility soils in the cowpea area. The annual nitrogen rate of 300 lbs/ac/yr was applied 4 times per year in the form of urea (46% N); potassium (400 lbs/ac/yr) was given in 2 applications in the form of potassium chloride (60% K2O); lime (1 lb/mat) was applied every two years using calcium hydroxide and magnesium (11.103/mat) was applied twice per year in the form of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4). The sub-plots receiving nematicide were treated with 2 cycles/yr of nemacur (25 gm 10% a.i. for each unit). Prior to first treatment of plots, leaf analysis indicated that there was potassium deficiency in all plots. Results from first year of the experiment indicated where only nitrogen was applied, there was poor stem growth, short finger length and low caliper grade. The application of nitrogen and potassium significantly increased banana plant growth, bunch weight, number of hand per bunch, finger lengths and caliper grade. The use of Nemacur showed better response in plots when only nitrogen was applied.
