[Application of an animal model for the genetic evaluation in goats]

The use of the BLUP methodology for animal genetic evaluation was carried out by Henderson at the Cornell University, and it was first applied to dairy cattle. The purpose is to use the same methodology in the evaluation of Andalusian goat breed. Milk production records from 19 controlled goat herds in recording programme, corresponding to the 1986-88 period with a total number of 2439 lactation records from 1248 goats, were considered. Environmental fixed effects (herd, year of kidding, month of kidding, number of kids and lactation number), were analyzed, being all of them significant. Five evaluations of animals were realized: the first estimate of genetic values with corrected productions for five effects was calculated, and the rest using the animal model with multiple records, including or not the fixed factors herd and relationships matrix. The conclusions were: 1) the five fixed factors need to be taken into in animal evaluations; 2) the BLUP valoration obtains more accurate estimates, because it uses more informations than adjusted productions; 3) the model can discriminate (even with reduced genealogical information), differences between the genetic mean levels of herds; and, 4) If the genealogical information is poor, good results were obtained for solving the equations system with few iterations
