The efficiency of the commercial probiotic preparations Lactiferm and Selbion was compared with that of Lactobacillus casei CCM 4160. Trial was made with 54 litters (529 piglets); 13 litters (136 piglets) were in the group administered Lactiferm, 12 litters (118 piglets) were in the Selbion group, 14 litters (131 piglets) in the Lb.c. CCM group, and the control group had 15 litters (144 piglets). Piglet weight after birth, piglet weight at the age of 14 days and mortality were the investigated characteristics. The average weight of piglets at the age of 14 days was 3.861 kg in the Lactiferm group, 3.894 kg in the Selbion group, 4.018 kg in the Lb.c. CCM 4160 group and 3.953 kg in the control group. The highest mortality of piglets in the period of observation (25 animals, i.e. 21.19 per cent) was recorded in the group administered Selbion after birth, the lowest (12 animals, i.e. 9.16 per cent) in the Lb.c. CCM 4160 group. The weanlings of the control group had the highest average weight gains (178 g) and the group administerd Selbion had the lowest (172 g). The lowest mortality rate was recorded in the CCM 4160 group of piglets (11.45 per cent), the highest in the Selbion group (24.58 per cent).
