Routine biochemical profile in clinically normal dogs

In this study the determination of the most important, from a clinical point of view, blood serum constituents namely, alkaline phosphatase, alanine aminotransferase, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, glucose, total cholesterol, total bilirubin, albumin, potassium, sodium, calcium and inorganic phosphorus, in the clinically normal dog was attempted. To be more realistic, for the benefit of the Greek small animal practitioner, we employed the same procedures and reagents used by most clinical biochemistry laboratories in our country. The blood samples were obtained from 100 clinically normal dogs, equally distributed into five groups with respect to age. Forty five dogs were purebreds, 35 crossbreds and 20 mongrels, their age ranged from one month up to 15 years and concerning their sex, 45 were males and 55 females (male to female ratio 0,81). Concerning the total number of sampled dogs the mean, the standard deviation as well as the actual and 95% or Gaussian range were calculated (Table 1). The mean, standard deviation and actual range for every biochemical parameter were also calculated for each age-oriented group separately (Tables 2-13). The statistical analysis showed that there were differences concerning the parameters alkaline phosphatase, total cholesterol, calcium, glucose and inorganic phosphorus between the groups. For the last two blood serum constituents the distribution of values was found to be uneven. These results, in general (the only exception being the albumin) are very similar to those reported in the current veterinary literature.
