Incidence and aetiology of clinical ovine mastitis in flocks in central Macedonia, Greece

In a field investigation of ovine mastitis in Northern Greece, a population of 5498 ewes was monitored over a period of four months after lambing. Clinical mastitis was recorded in 626 ewes: the incidence was 11.4%. Mycoplasma spp. and Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from 45.9% and 38.5% respectively of mammary secretion samples examined becteriologically from 150 ewes; coagulase-negative Staphylococci, Pasteurella haemolytica, Escherichia coli, Streptococci, Corynebacterium pyogens, Bacillus spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were isolated from the rest of 75 bacterial isolates tested for antibiotic sensitivity, 10 were resistant and 21 sensitive to at least five of the antibiotics tested.
