Stimulation of the flower buds of non-bearing plum trees using maleic acid hydrazide

In the first year of the experiment plum trees of the varieties Korai Besztercei, Besztercei 416 and Stanley were treated with 0, 100, 500 and 1000 ppm MH-50 maleic acid hydrazide /4 1/tree/. In the following year the treatment was repeated for half the trees. In Korai Besztercei a single treatment with 1000 ppm resulted in a yield surplus of 3.49 t/ha. A repeated dose of 500 ppm proved the most effective in Besztercei 416, while in Stanley a single dose of 500 ppm was sufficient to induce a considerable amount of flower bud formation. The yield increase was 43.9 o/o in Korai Besztercei, 40.7 o/o in Besztercei 416 and 36.3 o/o in Stanley. The plum varieties tested only begin to bear fruit in the 5-6th year. Treatment with maleic acid hydrazide improves the yield in the first years.
